SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS AND DISABILITIES

At The Kingsley School we strive to enable all of our students to realise their full potential by providing an inclusive education; one where all students of all capabilities have the opportunity to grow and learn. For most of our students this is achieved within the curriculum by Quality First Teaching from all members of staff. However, we recognise that some of our students have Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) that require support to help them achieve their individual outcomes or learning objectives.

Special Educational Needs and Disabilities

Students with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities are identified on the SEND Register, under the four areas of SEND in line with the SEN Code of Practice 2015:

  • Cognition and Learning (including Specific Learning Difficulties such as dyslexia, dyspraxia, ADHD).
  • Communication and Interaction (Speech and Language Difficulties, autism spectrum condition, including Asperger’s Syndrome).
  • Social, Emotional and Mental Health.
  • Sensory (including hearing or visual impairments), physical disabilities, medical conditions.

The Learning Support Department

We have a small, experienced team who support students with a range of additional needs. The Learning Support Department provides teachers and students with advice, help and support to enable all students to learn effectively. We work closely with a range of external professionals, including educational psychologists, occupational therapists, counsellors and mental health professionals.

All interventions are tailored to meet the individual needs of our students. Actions are reviewed and refined using the graduated four-part cycle (assess, plan, do, review). This facilitates better understanding of a student’s needs and identification of the support required to enable them to become life-long learners. Parents have a unique understanding of the needs of their children with SEND; their strengths and difficulties. Their involvement, alongside their children, is important to us in planning the provision and support needed whilst at The Kingsley School.

To ensure consistency in support and teaching across the school all SEND information on our students is shared with staff members via a Student Profile, or Student Passport.

Examination Access Arrangements

Some students sitting external examinations may require accommodations due to identified disabilities or learning difficulties. The Learning Support team works closely with students throughout their time at the school to establish their typical working methods/normal way of working, trialling different exam access arrangements to determine what best supports their SEND needs. This is alongside the required standardised assessments conducted by our specialist assessors. Applications for external examination entries are made in due course, following the detailed procedures set out by the JCQ.

English as an Additional Language

For students whose first language is not English, we may be able to provide targeted support to help develop their English language skills.

Education and Health Care Plans (EHCP)

Parents of students with an EHCP are invited to express interest, but please note, applications must follow the Local Authority process.
