CORE SUBJECTS IN YEARS 1-6
From Years 1-6 pupils study core subjects such as English, Mathematics and ICT within the framework of the National Curriculum.
MATHS AND ENGLISH
Firm foundations are laid in the essential skills of reading, basic numeracy and writing in Years 1 and 2. These early building blocks are developed and built upon within Key Stage 2 and the expectations of the National Curriculum remain as our minimum standards, with most children achieving well beyond these. Regular assessment of Mathematics and English skills ensure we maintain our individualised teaching programmes which, along with small class sizes, result in excellent value-added progress, with 85% of all children performing at or above national age expectations.
SCIENCE
Science teaching is closely linked to the 4D Creative Curriculum themes, allowing children to combine their knowledge and understanding of the world around them with the humanities elements of the themes being studied. This approach allows for the coverage of all National Curriculum objectives, but also creates a greater depth of understanding. Creating these cross-subject links gives rise to the opportunity for more aspirational teaching around key concepts, with children extending their learning well beyond the expectations of the National Curriculum objectives.
ICT
Classrooms contain interactive whiteboards and the students are encouraged to use their developing ICT skills across many areas of the curriculum. There are several fully equipped ICT suites available in both the Prep and the Senior School, as well as iPads for use in the classroom. The Science and ICT provision are supplemented by the Prep School ‘Innovation Station’ which provides students with the opportunity to design, build and experiment with a range of robotic equipment and other technologies. A well-resourced food and nutrition area is also available.
