Kingsley debaters gave outstanding performances at the Warwick Rotary Youth Speaks competition on Wednesday 13 November.
The event, which saw teams from schools across the county go head-to-head, was a fantastic opportunity for students to showcase their skills and passion for public speaking. Representing Kingsley in the Senior category were Year 10 students Annabel, Shivon and Natasha, while the Intermediate team consisted of Year 7 students Holly, Sukhmani and Ria. All six students are active members of Kingsley’s Debating Club, which meets once a week during Friday lunchtimes.
The teams were tasked with developing and delivering speeches on a topic of their choice, structured as a formal debate. Each team nominated a chairperson to lead the discussion, a proposer to argue the motion, and an opposer to challenge it. The topics selected by the students were both thought-provoking and timely, including debates on whether plastic should be banned and VAT abolished on school fees.
The competition was fierce, with top schools from across the county – including fellow Foundation Schools Warwick School and King’s High – taking part. Despite the tough competition, Kingsley’s Senior team emerged victorious, narrowly defeating runners-up King’s High. The win means they will move on to the District Heats in the New Year. Kingsley’s Intermediate team demonstrated impressive debating skills and were highly commended for their efforts. The students are already looking forward to the next competition!
We are incredibly proud of both teams for their hard work, dedication and exceptional performances. Stay tuned for further updates early next year!
