4D Curriculum – Year 5 and 6 Explore America

Each of our new 4D Curriculum themes is launched with a ‘Stunning Start’ that is intended to fire up the children’s imaginations and engage them in the lessons to come. ‘Marvellous Middle’ activities often take the shape of a school trip, or specialist workshop, and ‘Fabulous Finish’ celebrations are the children’s reward for a term of high-level, hands-on learning.

The whole school has been working under the theme of ‘Pole to Pole’ this term, with each class focusing their attention on a particular country or continent.

Year 5 and 6 have been learning about North and South America. Studies have included geographical research, historical discovery, and art and design work inspired by a range of American artists and innovators.

On Tuesday, Year 5 and 6 arrived at school dressed in costumes that reflected an array of American influences. There were an enormous variety of interpretations of the theme, with Donald Trump, The Statue of Liberty, Steve Jobs and Ariana Grande all appearing at morning registration!

The children enjoyed a full day of activities that began with an energetic line dancing session with our PE staff.
Next came a very popular chocolate tasting activity, which was reinforced with an opportunity for the children to conduct their own research into the history of chocolate in the ICT suite.

The children spent the afternoon creating their own dreamcatchers, and casting their handprints in clay in the style of the Chinese Theatre in Hollywood.

‘America’s Got Talent’ was the grand finale to the day, with every act receiving huge support and encouragement, and being rewarded with enormous applause.

Well done to Mr and Mrs Whatson (in their correctional facility jumpsuits) for organising such a fantastic day.
