Product Design
A-Level Product Design (Edexcel) is a creative and technical course that encourages students to develop their practical skills, creativity, and understanding of design processes. It prepares students for a career in design, engineering, or related fields, combining practical making skills with theoretical knowledge of design, materials, and manufacturing processes.
What will you study and learn?
- Design Process: Students learn to identify problems, develop solutions, and create innovative products. They explore user needs, generate ideas, and refine their designs through testing and evaluation.
- Practical Skills: Hands-on making is a key part of the course. Students work with a wide range of materials—such as wood, metal, plastics, and smart materials—and use techniques like 3D modeling, prototyping, and computer-aided design (CAD).
- Technical Knowledge: Students gain a deeper understanding of materials, manufacturing processes, and the impact of design on society and the environment. They also learn about contemporary design and technological developments.
Course content and examinations
- Component 1: Principles of Design and Technology
This is a written exam (50% of the final grade) that assesses students’ knowledge of materials, processes, environmental issues, and design theory. It includes problem-solving and evaluative questions. - Component 2: Independent Design and Make Project
This is a coursework project (50% of the final grade) where students independently design and create a product based on a design brief of their choice. The project includes research, development, making, and evaluation.
Why Choose Product design?
- Creative and Analytical Thinking: The course develops both creative skills and analytical problem-solving abilities, essential in a wide range of careers.
- Real-World Application: Students apply what they learn to solve real-world design challenges, preparing them for further study or work in design-related fields.
- University and Career Pathways: Product Design is ideal for students considering university degrees or careers in design, engineering, architecture, product development, or other creative industries.
Please note that if there are not sufficient numbers per course, the course may not run. Should this be the case we’ll discuss all options with students and parents, where possible we’ll run courses in collaboration with the foundation.
